The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum - Malacca / Melaka
Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum
The Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum is located at Jalan Tun Tan Cheng Lock, Melaka (Malacca), a World UNESCO Site. The Museum is a combination of three terrace lots that the Chan family acquired in 1861. Four generations lived in the house before it was opened as a museum in March 1985. The name of the Museum is derived from the term Baba, an honorific manner of addressing a Straits-born gentleman and Nyonya, which addresses a Straits-born lady.
The family still manages the Baba & Nyonya Heritage Museum. Their vision is to bridge communities to Malaysia’s history Peranakan identity and culture. By preserving this house for visitors and students, they hope to honour the Peranakan spirit, keeping it alive for many generations.
From as early as the 16th Century, merchants from China, India & Arabia came to the Straits Settlements (Singapore, Malacca, Penang) in search of trade. Some intermarried with local women, and their children were known as “Peranakan” or “Straits-Born.” There are the Peranakan India and Peranakan Jawi. Their story is of a Peranakan Chinese family.
